How to Take a Selfie as a Blind Person

The vision-impaired like to participate as much as any other person. This means that the blind like to participate in sports, theater, card games, and leadership. So, why shouldn’t the vision-impaired participate in taking photos and videos with their smartphones?

This is a technique taught to me by a completely blind person who enjoys taking photos, making videos, and posting them to social media. Initially, you might need some help from a sighted person to get the angles right. But after that, you can be your own cameraman/woman and become the next Internet superstar.

My completely blind friend told me that when he started taking selfies of himself for posting to social media, he had a sighted friend help him to angle the camera correctly as my friend held the camera at the end of his outstretched arm. The helper made sure that my friend was holding the camera so that my friend’s face was centered on the screen.

After a bit of practice holding the camera correctly for himself, he trained his muscles to know exactly where they should be in able to hold the camera correctly. From then on, my friend was able to photo and video himself whenever and wherever he wanted.

Your body is an amazing machine. Particularly when it comes to ‘remembering’ how to hold something. With repeated practice holding something at a certain angle with your hand and arm, you develop ‘muscle memory’ which will help you repeat the posture or action again and again correctly.

Vision is just one tool in your toolbox of problem-solving skills. But what if seeing is not available to you? Then, you will need to reach back into your skills toolbox to find something that does work to solve your problem. Since seeing is not necessary for doing photography, you may be surprised at just how many non-visual techniques can enable you to more fully participate in life’s adventures.
