How Do Blind People Follow in a Line?

Americans, along with several other cultures, are used to getting in lines. As one person moves forward, the person behind them moves forward also. This process continues until everyone has moved forward. But, if you can’t see, how do you know when to move forward when the person in front of you (probably a stranger) moves?

A technique I use for navigating a line utilizes both my hearing and my cane. I listen to the people in front of me. If I hear their voices start getting quieter, I use my cane to gently feel in front of me. I use a light pressure to move my cane along the ground in front of me. If my cane encounters resistance, then I know they haven’t moved forward. If I don’t feel any resistance, then it’s time for me to move forward. I keep moving until my cane encounters resistance. Then I stop and start the whole process over again. This pattern repeats itself until I get through the line.
